The Cookbook

Knead Peace brings together recipes from an international baking community united by a belief in the power of baking. The book received a Gourmand World Cookbook Award in recognition of the collection and the people behind it.

our beginning

Inspired by resilience

Knead Peace began in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the extraordinary example set by Anna Makievska and The Bakehouse in Kyiv.

Living and working through conflict, Anna and her team continued to bake around the clock, producing and distributing bread for soldiers, hospitals, older residents and families in devastated communities.

Their courage inspired chef Andrew Green to bring together bakers from around the world. The result was Knead Peace: Bake for Ukraine, an award-winning cookbook created to raise vital funds for the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Andrew Green

Andrew is a British Chef and sourdough baker who began his culinary career after leaving school and has worked in leading kitchens in the UK and abroad.

Moved by Anna's story, he contacted bakers and chefs across the world with a simple invitation, share a recipe and help support the people of Ukraine.

“Some absolutely amazing bakers stepped forward wanting to be a part of the project. They’ve been so generous with their recipes and their time. That resilient spirit of Anna and her bakers was incredible - as a baking community, we had to do something.”

The response showed what Andrew had long believed. Bakers form one of the most generous communities in the world, and when people come together around food, practical change becomes possible.

A movement that continues to grow

Since Knead Peace was published in October 2022, Knead Peace has grown into something much bigger than the book itself.

The new bakery gives Knead Peace a permanent home and creates a place where people can enjoy good bread, learn new skills, spend time together and support its wider purpose.

More than a cookbook

Knead Peace is a living community of professional bakers, home bakers, chefs and supporters who believe that something as familiar as bread can help create meaningful change.

Every recipe shared, event held, loaf baked and book purchased can become part of a wider act of solidarity.
